A Gutter Maintenance Checklist for Owners

Regular gutter maintenance is essential to protecting your property and gutters….but we know that saying it is easier than doing it. That’s why we’ve put together this simple DIY checklist to help owners like you stay on top of basic upkeep between our expert’s visits

Easy Steps for Healthy Gutters

While these steps are a great start, remember that nothing replaces the thorough, professional service our team provides. Think of this checklist as your backup plan – a way to keep things flowing smoothly until your next repair appointment with Holy City Gutterworks.

1. Inspect your gutters regularly.

Set a reminder to inspect your gutters at least twice a year – ideally in the spring and fall. Look for visible signs of damage, sagging or leaks. If you don’t have seamless systems, pay close attention to areas where gutters are joined. These are common spots for leaks or separations. Walk around your home after a rainstorm and look for waterfalls where there shouldn’t be any. This is a clear sign that your gutters might be clogged or damaged.

2. Clear debris build-up before it’s too late.

Leaves, twigs and other debris can accumulate in your gutters, especially during the fall. After this, clogged gutters can cause water to overflow and cause potential damage to your home’s foundation, siding and landscaping. Use a sturdy ladder to carefully remove debris by hand or with a gutter scoop. If cleaning by hand, always use gloves to protect yourself from sharp objects and wear safety glasses to shield your eyes from flying debris.

3. Check for proper water flow.

After cleaning the debris, use a garden hose to flush out any remaining dirt and check for proper water flow. This step will help identify blockages or areas where water might be pooling instead of flowing smoothly through the downspouts. If you notice a blockage, use a plumber’s snake or a similar tool to remove the obstruction.

4. Ensure downspouts are clear.

Your downspouts are critical for directing water away from your home’s foundation. Make sure they are free from clogs and extend at least five to 10 feet from your house. If you notice water pooling around the base of your home, you may need to adjust or have an extension added.

5. Inspect for loose or damaged fasteners.

Gutter fasteners can become loose or damaged over time, causing the gutters to sag or pull away from the house. Check that all fasteners, hangers and brackets are secure. If you notice any loose connections, call our team to assess (and fix) the situation.

6. Look for signs of rust or corrosion.

While most gutters today are made from rust-resistant materials like aluminum or copper, older gutters or specific components may still be susceptible. Look for rust spots, corrosion or flaking paint. If your gutters show multiple signs of wear, it might be time to consider an upgrade.

7. Trim overhanging branches.

Overhanging trees can drop leaves, twigs and even branches directly into your gutters. Trim back any branches that hang over your roofline to reduce debris build-up and prevent potential damage. Want to get ahead of these headaches? A little preventative trimming can save you a lot of trouble down the line.

8. Consider adding a gutter protection system.

If you find yourself constantly cleaning out your gutters, it might be worth investing in gutter guards. These simple additions can reduce the amount of debris that enters your gutters, making maintenance much easier. While gutter guards are not a replacement for regular cleaning, they can help minimize the frequency of clogs and build-up.

9. Schedule regular professional gutter maintenance.

While this checklist is a great way to maintain your gutters between professional visits, nothing replaces expert care. Scheduling regular professional maintenance ensures your gutters are thoroughly cleaned, inspected and repaired as needed. All-star teams like ours can catch potential issues before they become costly problems, saving you time and money in the long run.
